Discovered that I got up at 1 a.m. this morning rather than 5! Slight miscalculation. Even woke Anna – who was great sport, bless her!
We boarded the buses and got underway at 6 a.m., just in time to miss Kampala’s rush hour! The trip was, well…as expected! Long, hot and dirty. The road quality varied…
- Newly Paved
- Newly Paved with killer speed bumps every 30 feet
- Paved with light, shallow potholes (okay to swerve into oncoming traffic to miss a pothole on your side)
- Paved with heavy potholes (drive with one set of wheels off the road – either side depending on traffic)
- Heavy potholes with paving so you catch air if you’re going too fast
- Dirt road
- Dirt road with potholes
- Dirt road with potholes – some previously filled with mixed media
- Dirt road with chasm’s intentionally dug to stop traffic – once toll is negotiated, boards to cross the chasm are provided
Then there was the pig – cute little black piglet, dining on something in the middle of the road – the driver honked, but did not slow. The pig didn’t move. We were bearing down on the little guy when the driver finally hit the brakes – I thought we missed the little guy until Erynn, in the bus behind us sent Dee a text “Dee, You guys just hit a pig.”
The pig survived, but may not be called tripod as he limped away on three legs! π
GEO expected the trip to take 7-8 hours. It took 10, and we stopped once for facilities… Can’t thank Mim enough for convincing me to take Kleenex with me! That was the only luxurious thing about the stop! ‘Nough said! π
Did see some Baboons – the big ones look pretty mean, even from a distance. Long teeth and a constant frown. I had no desire to even get up close for a pic!
Had a security briefing the first night we got there…”This feels like a long boring, painfully slow church service, when you’re five-years-old and are hungry and tired!”
