So Meredith was right all along…we road tripped from Mazar to Kabul yesterday. Trip was uneventful – even the potentially dangerous stretch between Mazar and Pul-e-Khumri. Planned to arrive at 2:30 p.m. but got stuck outside Baghram Air Base for a couple of hours as a convoy of military vehicles exited.
Finally arrived in Kabul about 6 p.m. – changed cars outside the airport and made it to the gate with minutes to spare…well, we though so anyway. Turns out the flight was delayed by a couple of hours.
As a woman in Afghanistan, road trips are difficult mostly because there are either limited or no restroom facilities for you. So one tends to drink and eat as little as possible. That coupled with 8 hrs in the airport the previous day with nothing but water, diet coke & chips… Meredith & I were famished by the time we hit Kabul. Murphy to the rescue! BLTs & Haribo – it doesn’t get any better than that!
Am sorry I had my camera packed, but at least Meredith had her iPhone! Most of these shots are through 2-inch safety glass on the AV.

Enjoying the road trip!
