Let me preface this next entry by saying that while some people are content to revel in the journey, I have always been more focused on the destination. This will be an important bit of context for the following bit…
We (Erynn, Tony and I) ended our journey from Wat Pho with a water taxi ride back towards Chinatown. Being out on the water with a cool breeze washing over us was a welcome relief to the intense heat of the day. It was so welcome we ended up missing our stop (a 5-minute walk to our hotel) and went two stops further.
Once off the taxi we decided to wander back towards our hotel, looking for somewhere to eat along the way. Unfortunately we ended up in a part of town that was pretty much locked down for the evening. We wandered for hours, past pick-up soccer games, clumps of bored street vendors and wild dogs (no, I am not kidding, really – wild dogs…cats too). The next day we staggered into camp. Okay, it wasn’t the next day, but it was hours. It was hot – and I was too tough to complain about passing up tuk-tuk after tuk-tuk!
We finally made it back to our hotel, walked past it and ended up just around the corner at a little joint where it had rained every time we ate dinner. Tom Yum soup, greens, a tofu dish, a chicken dish and several chilled Singha’s later – I was a much more relaxed human being!
Though I have to admit – while I am all about the destination, my traveling companions love for the journey may just have rubbed off a bit on me…but only a bit!
