The trip in from the airport takes about 15 minutes. At first the buildings are sparce and the ground is muddy. As we near Mazar the roads and other infrastructure improve. Two things strike me: first is the amount of new construction going on – from large buildings to small businesses; second are the numbers of going concerns. There are what appear to be thriving business everywhere.
Arriving at the office was like being escorted to a reception. The staff, many of whom has been working hard for days to prepare the office and guest house were all here to greet us. They beamed as we inspected the office and guest house. …and honestly, they earned every once of pride! What they’ve managed to accomplish in the past 10 days is remarkable!!! They’ve managed to furnish some 11 rooms with one or more desk and chair. Set-up the office and guest house with wireless Internet. I’ve managed to snag a corner office on the top floor with a view of….well the guest house balcony. Well, a corner anyway. In truth I can see several buildings further – the most striking one is a pale green color with sandy brown accents.
The guest house is equally as impressive as the office. For instance, each room in the guest house has a queen bed, vanity (with seat) and armoire. Not to mention sheets, two blankets and a carpeted floor. I’ll not go so far as to say it’s my taste – but it’s clean, furnished and ready for my weary head!
I am finally home, not yet my home.
